Story Behind The Cake

Back in 2018 during one Passover my cousin invited a group of her friends to the Seder dinner. One of her friends brought a orange and placed it on top of the Seder Plate. At first it was quite a curious site but then she went on to explain its was a fairly new and modern tradition that had been added to the Passover holidays. The tradition started when Susannah Heschel found the story in a feminist Haggadah  (the text read at Passover) written by a student in the 1980's. Around the same time Susannah was at Oberlin Collage visiting to give a talk. It about how a young Jewish Lesbian was told by her higher up that "there is as much place for a lesbian in Judaism as there is for hametz**** at the Seder table." In response to this, Susannah brought a orange to Passover and placed it at the table as a symbol of acceptance and inclusion of women and LGBTQ people and anyone else who was previously marginalized.

It is a sign that all are welcome to celebrate their faith safely and with love and acceptance at the table. Some will even eat segments of the orange and spit out the seeds as a symbol of rejecting homophobia.

Since then my cousins friend has transitioned and now goes by the name Margalit which in Hebrew translates to "Pearl" for she has come through shining as her own true self so we named this cake after her!

So with love and acceptance, please enjoy this cake!
